Mau-Mau is Germany's national card game and the public-domain ancestor of UNO — the name roughly means "nothing nothing", which is exactly what your hand should be. Match the suit or rank of the open card, dodge the draw-two sevens, skip players with eights, and wish a suit with a Jack.

Here you can play Mau-Mau online free, straight from the browser: hit Quick Play to join a table in seconds, or create a private room for two to six players and share its five-character code.

Mau-Mau in a nutshell

Played with 52 cards (2 through Ace in four suits), six cards each. On your turn lay one card matching the suit or rank of the open card — or draw from the stock if you can't or won't. First player to shed every card wins the round; everyone else counts penalty points for their remaining cards (Ace 11, Ten 10, King 4, Queen 3, Jack 2, numbers face value).

What do the power cards do?

The three classic Mau-Mau functions:

CardEffect
7The next player must draw 2 cards — playing another 7 raises it to 4, 6, 8 ... for the following player
8The next player misses their turn (with two players you play again).
JackPlayable on any card except another Jack; the player names the suit to follow.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used in Mau-Mau?

Traditionally 32 (the Skat deck); this online version uses all 52 cards (2 to Ace) so up to six players can hold six cards each and the stock lasts.

How many players can play Mau-Mau?

Two to six at one table. Quick matches seat four; empty seats are filled by AI.

What happens with a 7?

The next player draws two cards. Playing another 7 raises the penalty to 4, then 6, 8 ... cards for the following player. No other card cancels it.

What does the 8 do?

The 8 skips the next player — in a two-player game you simply play again.

Can you play Jack on Jack?

No — "Bube auf Bube stinkt". A Jack may be played on any other card, and the player names the next suit.

What about the calls?

With one card left you call "Mau!", and "Mau-Mau!" when playing the last card. Online the system announces automatically.

How is the game scored?

Ace 11, Ten 10, King 4, Queen 3, Jack 2, numbers face value; a Jack as the winning card doubles everything. First to 100 penalty points loses the match.

Is this Mau-Mau game really free?

Yes — play free at maumau.yeeqia.com directly in your browser, no download or sign-up required.

Does it work on mobile?
